WiseOceans Community

We believe in an open, positive, sharing conservation community. All projects undertaken by the WiseOceans team follow our principles of collaboration, transparency, and open communication, with both relevant stakeholders and the local community.

We strongly believe that environmental education is one of the most effective forms of conservation, and that it plays a vital role in securing the future health of our oceans, and their inhabitants.

WiseOceans Marine Scholarship Programme

The Marine Scholarship Programme

The Marine Scholarship programme is a capacity building traineeship funded by Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Fund and delivered by GVI Seychelles and numerous local partnerships. The aim of the programme is to increase access to Blue Economy and Marine Conservation workplaces, via 9-month programmes that entail in-depth theoretical and practical training centered around the local marine environment.

Through this programme we will aid young adults to forge careers in the Blue Economy, which is the biggest growing sector in Seychelles and help to create the next generation of stewards of the Seychelles marine environment.

The Marine Education Programme

The WiseOceans Marine Education programme was a three-year programme funded by the Global Environment Fund and UNDP, in partnership with the Seychelles Ministry of Education. This programme increased marine learning in formal education across Mahé, through the development and integration of marine lessons into the national primary and secondary school curriculum.

During this programme we engaged with 3,922 students, increasing their understanding of marine science concepts, and giving them a greater understanding of their local environment.

Seychelles Blue Economy Youth Programme

In collaboration with the Seychelles Department for the Blue Economy, and the British High Commission of Seychelles, we delivered two Blue Economy Youth Programmes (2017 and 2018). Each programme entailed a two-week intensive and fun course and was offered to secondary school students across Seychelles. These programmes gave the students a valuable introduction to the ocean, and to the Blue Economy, among other marine conservation fields.

Reef Restoration

We create effective, engaging, and educational reef restoration projects of innovative design, which are bespoke to the local environmental and stakeholder needs. Based on sound scientific foundations, our projects assist the natural recovery of a reef and help to maintain coral diversity and natural resilience.

We have numerous projects where we aim to restore degraded areas of reef using the coral gardening technique and to inspire a sense of stewardship in local and international communities by connecting people to coral, and the threats that our reefs face.
