Established in 1992, Project AWARE® is a global movement for ocean protection powered by a community of adventurers. Our mission is to connect the passion for ocean adventure with the purpose of marine conservation. We bring together a dedicated team of individuals around the world who share a passion for ocean protection and adventure to secure real and direct environmental victories. We collaborate, co-create and partner with individuals, governments, NGOS, and businesses who, like us, believe in a future where the ocean no longer needs protecting.
We champion policy change, engage and activate a global volunteer community to tackle specific objectives for global ocean protection. With offices located in Australia, United Kingdom and the United States, we take action to create both local and global change for the ocean and the communities who depend on it. Our local actions collectively protect the most vulnerable marine species and decrease pollution. Project AWARE is a registered non-profit organization.
The Importance of Communications to Project AWARE
As a global movement and international non-profit, we communicate with a variety of multinational, multicultural constituencies including funders, partner organizations, individual advocates, NGOs, and members of the media. Our communications mediums are diverse, ranging from print publications, to online communications, earned media, social media, conferences, and public speaking engagements; because of this diversity, our communications must be consistent, compelling and timely; targeted to the appropriate audience; and written for the appropriate communications medium.
To ensure our communications are most effective, the Communications Specialist must work collaboratively with all members of the Project AWARE global team and coordinate the dissemination of information to maximize our messages. Knowledge in our current key focus areas, marine debris and shark conservation, and a genuine interest in ocean conservation and adventure in general are essential to understand and appreciate the guiding principles of our conservation strategy. Knowledge of the scuba diving industry or being a scuba diver is helpful to understand and appreciate our history and the context of our work.
About the position
The Communications Specialist focuses on raising public awareness of the organization, its work and impact by coordinating the organization’s media and digital outreach efforts both online and offline. He/she supports the development and implementation of global communications plans, manages regular web updates and supports web development projects.
Through compelling and creative storytelling, he/she brings the Project AWARE brand to life and demonstrates the positive impact of our conservation actions. With guidance and support from the Programs, Fundraising and Community Engagement staff, he/she ensures that our global audience is informed, confident, and inspired to speak out and take action for the ocean fins on and off.
The Communications Specialist must be an excellent writer, storyteller and give exceptional attention to detail. It is critical that she/he understands the importance of consistency in communications, targeted communications and selecting the most effective communications medium to maximize and amplify our collective voice.
The Communications Specialist helps define the way that people perceive Project AWARE as a global brand, movement and leader in the ocean conservation community. He/she works closely with the Web and Tech Specialist and Community Engagement team to ensure consistency of logos, designs and voice across all marketing collaterals and conservation tools. He/she helps with managing and shaping our reputation, as well as ensuring that our values and org culture transpire in our communications online and offline.
The Communications Specialists works closely with the Associate Director, Global Communications to report on the success of our communications efforts and how they contribute to achieving our mission.
Global responsibilities Include but are not limited to:
- Content development: develop and place engaging, strategic content telling stories on the web (using Drupal), social media and in print. Support the development and implementation of the global communications plan and project specifics communications.
- Print and Email Communications: coordinate and support content development for our monthly e-News and other targeted email communications. Edit print and online communications materials written by Project AWARE staff and ensure all communications adhere to the org’s style guide and editorial guidelines.
- Media Relations: support media outreach and maintenance of global media contact list; write key messages, press releases and statements, collect media mentions and serve as a media contact for the organization. Create and develop opportunities to expand our media outreach outside of the dive industry.
- Event Communications: work with global team to develop event communications and promote the event
- Web and Social Media: help maintain a consistent voice and style across all online platforms, coordinate regular web and social media updates
- Resource Development: support the production, translation and distribution of collaterals including brochures, annual reports, videos, graphics, print Adverts and more.
- Partnerships: provides communications support to manage and maintain corporate and alliance partnerships deliverables and shared goals. Work with vendors, including print companies,
- Analytics: provide monthly updates on global analytics and KPIs. Measure and evaluate online and print communications and media relations
- Project Management: creation of action plans; coordination of multiple tasks and priorities; adhering to timelines and budgets
- Teamwork: collaborate with virtual, cross-office, cross-functional teams to accomplish organizational objectives. Foster a culture of collaboration, connection, empowerment, authenticity and positive change - to build consensus and influence support for Project AWARE initiatives throughout the organization
- Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director, Global Communications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university required
- Three to five (3-5) years of experience in Marketing and communications – online and offline.
- Proven experience in marine conservation non-profit, fundraising, or web/social media management in a data-driven program/campaign setting.
- Excellent writing, editing and presentation skills
- Is a strategic big picture thinker, a motivated self-starter with exceptional planning and organizational skills
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and thrive in a high change, multinational, multicultural and virtual work environment
- Goal driven and results oriented professional that enjoy the flexibility of working both on a team and autonomously
- PC literate: Microsoft Office, CRM, web & social media
- Database software, and web & social media savvy
- Willing to travel
Preferred but not required
- Experience with marine conservation and diving/dive industry, including a working knowledge of ocean issues and a passion for conservation
- Has worked internationally or with staff or clients located in a multiple countries
- Digital content management experience
- Rebranding experience
- Knowledge of SEO techniques
- Video creation & editing skills
- Familiar with Drupal and Engaging Networks
- Familiar with adobe creative suite
- Working Knowledge of other languages, in particular Chinese a plus
