Discover your inner marine biologist on a life-changing expedition aboard the Research Vessel Garvin. Field School offers hands-on intensive marine biology courses. Live your dream of getting practical field experience on the ocean, building life-long friendships, and connecting with professional mentors.

Field School was founded on three core beliefs:

1. Learning environments should be challenging, fun, supportive, and inclusive.

2. Every student (and their dreams and aspirations) matters.

3. Field work is at the heart of understanding ecosystems, training future scientists, and protecting our natural world.

Join us to learn about shark handling and workup procedures, as well as receive training in shark fishing methods including drumlines, longlines, and gillnets. You’ll learn how to safely collect data from a wide variety of shark species, and discover proven techniques for minimizing the capture stress they experience.

Over the course of the week, you’ll see tremendous improvements in your new field skills and be awed by the beautiful ocean ecosystems of South Florida.

In addition to field days, this course includes classroom instruction on the fascinating science of shark biology, ecology, and conservation. We also include a workshop on talking to the public about sharks, because science communication skills are vital for those who care about animals that are threatened and dangerously misunderstood.

Course fees include: All field research activities, transportation once participants arrive at the RV Garvin, and all housing and food costs (except for one "dinner out" at a local restaurant).

More information about the course, fees and the link to the application can be found here:
