We asked hundreds of marine conservation professionals what their top tips are for getting in to and developing a marine conservation career.

Here’s what they had to say:

• Volunteer: Take part in every opportunity offered and proactively seek to gain new experiences, whether that’s abroad or local!
• Persevere: The field is competitive, but true passion shines through
• Statistics: Yes, really! Give yourself an edge and acquire new skills that will help you in the long-term
• Networking: Get to know key contacts in the field, both locally and internationally. Become an active part of communities, both online and in-person 
• Uniqueness: What makes you stand out? What are your key skills?

Marine Expeditions are a brilliant way to obtain some of the skills listed above. However, there is a huge range of expeditions available so sometimes it can be hard to pick the right one.  

Things to consider include:

• Is there a particular topic you are interested in?
• Do you want to learn to scuba dive?
• Are you interested in community outreach, education, or operations?
• What are the research aims of the project?
• What will your contributions be?
• What experiences and skills will you gain?
• Does the project have good links with other organisations and the community?
